Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, James grew up surrounded by gospel music and later absorbed influences from different parts of the United States and around the world. He began releasing his own music in 2012 and has developed an independent career without major-label or large-scale public-relations backing. Although he sometimes performs covers, he describes himself as an original artist whose shows combine varied musical styles, strong feeling, and unpredictable intensity.
