(N)O King(s)
(N)O King(s) is an INseries Opera production in the 2026–2027 season that brings together four short, boldly theatrical vocal works around themes of monarchy, power, and the unraveling of the American dream. Conceived by artistic director Timothy Nelson, the program is billed as a “Requiem for the American Dream,” pairing three audacious 20th-century vocal-theater pieces with a 21st-century opera: Judith Weir’s King Harald’s Saga, Peter Maxwell Davies’s 8 Songs for a Mad King, Luciano Berio’s O King, and George Benjamin and Martin Crimp’s Into the Little Hill. Visual artist and photographer Connie Imboden contributes image design to the production, which aims to turn the dark corners of the “Great American Century” into a haunting and mesmerizing evening.
The production runs at two venues in early 2027: first in Washington, DC, from January 23 through January 31, with an opening night reception on the 23rd, and then in Baltimore from February 5 through February 7. A Director’s Salon preview event is scheduled for January 7 at 6 p.m.
