Fran Vielma Quartet - Outdoor Concert

Fran Vielma Quartet brings an evening of Venezuelan jazz to the Riverworks Outdoor Stage. Led by Venezuelan-Andean percussionist, composer, and educator Fran Vielma, the quartet explores Pan-American rhythms alongside the freedom and improvisation of jazz, with music shaped by Vielma’s research, concert-music interests, and distinctive approach to instrumental color and counterpoint.

The quartet includes Luis Hernandez on saxophones, Savino Palumbo on piano, and Steve Arnold on acoustic bass. Vielma is an award-winning artist who has performed and recorded internationally with musicians including John Medeski, George Garzone, Paul Winter, Bob Moses, Antonio Sánchez, Randy Brecker, and others. His projects include the suite “Common Grounds,” commissioned by Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works and premiered at SFJAZZ, as well as the albums “Inesperado” and “Tendencias.” He has toured with the Venezuelan Jazz Collective and serves on the faculty of the Peabody Institute’s Jazz Department at Johns Hopkins University.
