Janel Leppin's Ensemble Volcanic Ash
Janel Leppin leads Ensemble Volcanic Ash in a five-piece performance built from composition, orchestration, improvisation, and the energy of Washington, D.C.’s new-music, jazz, rock, and experimental scenes. The ensemble’s sound can be cinematic, forceful, tender, and unrestrained, combining chamber-music textures with the rawer feel of a compact, hard-driving combo.
The performance draws on material from the group’s third album, *Pluto in Aquarius*. Leppin describes this incarnation as leaner, grittier, and more immediate than the ensemble’s earlier midsize-chamber-ensemble approach, with music that surges, expands, recedes, and moves in several directions at once.
