Study Hall

Study Hall is a participatory salon for sharing ideas, questions, and creative work in an informal, discussion-focused setting. Topics may be anything participants might have discussed during free time between classes or in a school cafeteria, including subjects that do not fit neatly into an academic setting. Expertise is not required: attendees can present something they have learned, propose a question for group discussion, or simply offer an interesting prompt.

Presentations are followed by questions and conversation rather than a fixed lecture format. Participants may also share artwork in any medium, including visual, audio, written, or class-related projects. The event is hosted in accordance with Chatham House rules, meaning attendees may use information they hear but may not identify or reveal the affiliations of speakers or other participants.

Venue: Rhizome DC

Format: Attendees sign up to present a topic at the beginning of the event. Presentations have no set time limit and can continue until the group begins asking questions and moves into a Q&A. Participants may also add themselves to the agenda before the event.

Presentations: Speakers do not need to be specialists or have definitive answers. Sharing a learned subject, raising an unresolved question, or offering a discussion prompt are all encouraged.

Artwork: Participants may share work in any medium, either at the beginning, between presentations, or at the end of the salon.

Discussion policy: Chatham House rules apply. Information may be discussed afterward, but the identities and affiliations of speakers and other attendees must remain private.
