Beyond the Basics: Intermediate Screenprinting on Fabric

Sat, Nov 21, 2026at 10:30 AM
4318 Gallatin Street, Hyattsville, MD
$239

Beyond the Basics: Intermediate Screenprinting on Fabric is a hands-on workshop for students who already understand the fundamentals of screenprinting and want to create more complex textile designs. Participants will practice registering and printing multiple colors, using transparent base to create color overlays, and “unhinging” a screen to produce larger prints. Each student will leave with two yards of printed fabric, a new screen, and techniques for continuing to explore layered screenprinted designs.

The class is led by interdisciplinary artist Josh Kery, whose work spans screenprint, textiles, and code. Kery has exhibited at Pittsburgh’s Frame Gallery, MuseumLab, and the Fabric Workshop and Museum, and holds a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University.

When: November 21

Showtimes: 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

Venue: Pyramid Atlantic Art Center

Tickets: $239

Registration deadline: Registration closes November 13, 2026.

Level: Intermediate. Students must have completed an introductory screenprinting class on fabric or paper, or have comparable experience covering screen exposure and basic printing. The prerequisite course or experience should represent approximately six hours of instruction.

What you’ll learn: The workshop covers multi-color registration and printing, mixing transparent base into ink for layered color effects, and enlarging prints by removing the screen’s hinge.

What you’ll make: Participants will produce two yards of printed fabric and receive a new screen to take home for future multi-color printing projects.

Included materials: The registration includes a $70 materials fee. This covers consumable supplies such as ink, tape, newsprint, emulsion, and cleaners, as well as one new screen for each student to keep.

Additional screen: Students need access to two screens in total. A second personal silkscreen is required in addition to the screen included in the materials fee. Classroom screens will be available, or students may purchase an additional screen from the center for $30 by reserving it before class.

What to bring: Students should bring clean, ironed fabric such as tea towels, T-shirts, or other flat textiles, with several pieces recommended. They should also bring an image or images to work with; further guidance will be provided in the registration confirmation email. An apron and notebook or sketchbook are optional. Participants may bring an apron or wear clothing suitable for getting ink on it, and extra aprons will be available.

Instructor: Josh Kery is an interdisciplinary artist working in screenprint, textiles, and code. He has a background in fine arts and human-computer interaction, earned his BFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 2020, and works as a freelance designer, developer, and content manager in Washington, DC.
