Jentleson argues that Democrats must learn from the political successes of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Barack Obama. He contends that the party should respond more carefully to public opinion while also working to shape it, rather than allowing interest groups and activists to prevent the formation of a lasting liberal realignment.

He founded and leads the Searchlight Institute, a nonprofit focused on encouraging political realignment through innovative policy ideas. He is a regular *New York Times* contributor and MSNBC political commentator, and wrote *Kill Switch: The Rise of the Modern Senate and the Crippling of American Democracy*. He lives in Takoma Park, Maryland.
Conversation partner: Jerusalem Demsas is the founder, editor-in-chief, and CEO of The Argument, a magazine devoted to politics, policy, and culture through polling, evidence-based journalism, and debate. She previously worked as a staff writer at *The Atlantic* and a policy journalist at Vox, and is the author of *On the Housing Crisis*.
