Ellen Gira and Friends
Cellist Ellen Gira brings a distinctive blend of Celtic and American folk traditions to Strathmore’s Mansion venue for two performances on Sunday, June 20, 2027. Rooted in the musical styles of Celtic fiddle music, bluegrass, and country, her work draws on classical training as well as seven years spent in Glasgow, Scotland, where she performed, taught, and earned a PhD from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. A native of the DC area, Gira is also a 2026 Artist in Residence at Strathmore, and this concert presents her music alongside a cadre of trusted collaborators.
The program reflects Gira’s wide-ranging career as a performer and recording artist. She has toured as half of the fiddle-cello duo Jocelyn Pettit & Ellen Gira, whose debut album *All It Brings* won Traditional Album of the Year at the 2024 Canadian Folk Music Awards. She also plays with Celtic fiddler Seán Heely and with The Nightjars, an ensemble that offers a fresh take on American musical traditions. Her career highlights include performances at Celtic Connections in the UK, the Celtic Colours International Festival in Canada, the Urkult Festival in Sweden, the Kennedy Center, live appearances on BBC Radio and TV, and a performance for King Charles III.
