A World Without Them

A World Without Them is a theatrical production presented by the UMD School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. The work is co-created by Deaf artist Landon Krentz and Ghost River Theatre’s Eric Rose, and it explores the theme of extinction in its many forms—natural, cultural, and personal. The production poses a central question: what do we lose when someone or something disappears, whether a species, a culture, a language, or a voice?

The performance is described as a visually stunning and emotionally powerful blend of physical theatre and visual vernacular, a storytelling technique rooted in Deaf expression. In this production, gesture replaces dialogue and movement becomes meaning, allowing the work to transcend language and cultural barriers. It is framed as a bold celebration of Deaf artistry, a tribute to those who came before, and an invitation to imagine a future where no story is left behind.
