Ruben Studdard, the beloved winner of the second season of *American Idol*, brings his soulful R&B and gospel-infused vocals to Blues Alley in Washington, DC, on Friday, November 20, 2026. Known as “The Velvet Teddy Bear” — a nickname bestowed by Gladys Knight — Studdard has enjoyed a career spanning gold records, Grammy nominations, and a starring role in the 30th anniversary tour of *Ain’t Misbehavin’*. Raised in Birmingham, Alabama, and inspired by his idol Fred Hammond, he first sang in church and later fronted the local R&B/Jazz group Just A Few Cats. His debut single “Flying Without Wings/Superstar” achieved gold status, and he has continued to release albums such as *Love IS*. Through the Ruben Studdard Foundation for the Advancement of Children in the Music Arts, he also supports music education.
