Washington Glass School at 25: It Takes a Village
Washington Glass School at 25: It Takes a Village celebrates 25 years of experimentation, collaboration, and community at the Washington Glass School. The exhibition brings together work created by the school’s founders, directors, instructors, resident artists, and alumni, highlighting the highly individual ways artists have used glass rather than presenting a single Washington Glass School style.
Founded in Washington, DC, in 2001 by Tim Tate and Erwin Timmers, the school later welcomed Michael Janis, who became a co-director in 2005. WGS initially emphasized kiln-forming, casting, mixed media, and experimental approaches instead of traditional glassblowing. Its community grew through shared equipment, collaborative projects, teaching, and exchanges of ideas, eventually leading to exhibitions, museum collections, and large-scale public artworks. The school moved to Mount Rainier, Maryland, in 2006 and became part of the creative community along the Route 1 corridor and in the Gateway Arts District. The exhibition also reflects how a traditional material can support contemporary, varied, and thought-provoking artistic practices.
