Are You Now or Have You Ever Been?

Eric Bentley’s docudrama examines artists and performers summoned before the House Un-American Activities Committee during the McCarthy era. Drawing on original HUAC hearing transcripts, the production explores political pressure, intimidation, loyalty tests, and the moral compromises forced by public accusation.

Directed by Tony Award winner Anna D. Shapiro, the Arena Stage production comes to Washington after an Off-Broadway engagement at New York City Center. The cast includes Peter Jacobson, Jason Babinsky, and Edward L. Simon.
