Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, discusses his human-rights work and the organization’s efforts to challenge unfair sentencing, wrongful convictions, and mistreatment of incarcerated people and people with mental illness. EJI has helped overturn convictions or secure releases for more than 140 people wrongly sentenced to death, as well as obtaining relief for hundreds of others.

Stevenson has argued significant cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, including the 2012 decision prohibiting mandatory life-without-parole sentences for children age 17 or younger and a 2019 ruling protecting condemned prisoners with dementia.
