Pathways of Light
Pathways of Light is a Washington Master Chorale concert about the transformation of music rooted in everyday singing into choral art. The program moves from Antonín Dvořák’s treatment of Czech folk melodies and Béla Bartók’s collection of Hungarian folk songs to spirituals arranged by R. Nathaniel Dett, while also exploring the atmospheric sound worlds of Ēriks Ešenvalds and two contemporary American composers.
The performance includes Ešenvalds’s Northern Lights, featuring water-tuned glasses and chimes, and concludes with Dett’s The Chariot Jubilee. Andrew Vu’s A Golden Day and Kabanya Vinson’s All Creatures of Our God and King, receiving its world premiere, add two new American works to the program.

Featured Artists: Edward Washington II, tenor; Evelyn Simpson Curenton, organ; and Andrew Rosenblum, principal accompanist.
Tenor: Edward Washington II is a lyric tenor who has performed with organizations including the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Detroit Opera, Opera Omaha, and Lyric Opera of Chicago. A three-time Grammy nominee and two-time winner, he has performed roles including Tamino in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Robbins in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, and Mr. Scratch in The Devil and Daniel Webster. His concert work includes Mozart’s Requiem, Dett’s The Chariot Jubilee, and Hailstork’s I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes. He has premiered nine American works and makes his Washington Master Chorale debut with this concert.
