Jewish Welcome Workshop

The Jewish Welcome Workshop is a 38-week course for people who want to learn more about Judaism, including those considering conversion and people who have recently discovered Jewish ancestry. The program combines classroom study with participation in the broader Sixth & I and Washington, DC, Jewish communities. By the end of the course, non-Jewish participants are intended to be prepared either to convert to Judaism or to live as a Ger Toshav, or “fellow traveler,” with the Jewish people.

The course includes lectures, group activities, Jewish text study, and holiday celebrations. No prior Hebrew knowledge is required. Participants interested in conversion meet individually with one of the rabbis during the year, and the rabbi determines, in consultation with each participant, when they are ready for the conversion itself.

Course length: 38 weeks

Prerequisite: Participants must first complete an Introduction to Judaism course. Sixth & I’s five-week Basically Jewish course is one option, although the prerequisite may be completed elsewhere. University academic courses do not satisfy this requirement.

Admissions: Submitting the interest form places an applicant on the rolling admissions list but does not guarantee a place in the next cohort.
