Why?
WHY? is the musical project of Yoni Wolf, whose raw, confessional work blends rap, folk, indie rock, and experimental songwriting. The event centers on WHY?’s ninth album, *Oh Golly / Yes Lord*, a deeply personal exploration of loneliness, middle age, online dating, social media, anxious attachment, and the challenge of reconciling opposing sides of one’s personality.
The album is divided into two contrasting perspectives: “Oh Golly,” representing frustration or a bad attitude, and “Yes Lord,” expressing acceptance and gratitude. Drawing on the years following a difficult breakup, Wolf turns embarrassing, painful, hopeful, and self-deprecating experiences into autobiographical vignettes about trying to connect and change. The music moves between stark solo arrangements, rap, atmospheric electronics, acoustic passages, R&B, and abrupt shifts that mirror the internal conflict at the heart of the project.
The performance is associated with WHY?’s long history of experimentation, from the project’s earlier albums *Oaklandazulasylum*, *Alopecia*, and *Mumps, Etc.* through *AOKOHIO* and 2024’s *The Well I Fell Into*. Contributors to *Oh Golly / Yes Lord* include Wolf’s brother and longtime collaborator Josiah, producer Andrew Broder, and Nate Mercereau, who worked extensively on the album’s “Oh Golly” half with guitar arrangements, synthesizers, and other elements. Songs highlighted in the album’s concept include “Sin Lite,” “Hare,” “Pretend So Real,” “Story Of My Life,” and “In Spirit.”
