I Am Mario (So Mario)

I Am Mario (So Mario) is an intimate Mexican drama about Mario, a 40-year-old transgender cab driver who is saving for gender-affirming care. When he can no longer afford his medication, an unexpected pregnancy presents the possibility of becoming a parent, while also forcing him to confront the tension between pregnancy and the masculine identity he has worked hard to establish. Supported by his largely understanding mother and two sisters, Mario must reconsider his assumptions about identity, embodiment, family, and parenthood as he imagines a different future for himself.

Sharon Kleinberg’s directorial debut stars transgender nonprofessional actor Oustin de León, whose performance brings sensitivity to Mario’s struggle. The film was an official selection of the 2026 Guadalajara and Toronto film festivals.
