blooming / Rhea Burdick / Patrick Smith
blooming, a St. Louis guitar and double-bass duo, performs instrumental music that combines pastoral minimalism, sustained drone, and traditional and folk influences. The bill also features Rhea Burdick, an experimental folk musician and instrument maker, and Patrick Smith, a Takoma Park guitarist and composer known for contemplative acoustic fingerstyle music.
Burdick performs on violin, viola, and self-designed experimental banjo, using traditional folk songs as starting points for free improvisation. A trained violin maker, she develops innovative banjo designs with distinctive sounds and has independently released six albums. Smith has released three solo acoustic fingerstyle albums and is recording new work for an upcoming release titled *Other Lands*. He has performed with oDD Camp, the Solaris Guitar Trio, FingerPaint, the Orchestra of Crafty Guitarists, and as a soloist. His compositions have also been used in dance performances in several cities, including at Washington, DC’s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
