Amazing Theatre Company Presents Josiah Henson: No Uncle Tom
Amazing Theatre Company presents *Josiah Henson: No Uncle Tom*, a theatrical portrait of the author, minister, and abolitionist whose life took him from enslavement in Maryland to freedom and advocacy in Upper Canada. The production follows Henson’s fight for human dignity and his work to support formerly enslaved people.
Actor Curtis McNeil portrays Josiah Henson. Henson was born into slavery in Charles County, Maryland, in 1789. After escaping with his family to Upper Canada in 1830, he helped establish the Dawn Settlement and a school for formerly enslaved people. He later spoke publicly against slavery and wrote an autobiography that helped inspire Harriet Beecher Stowe’s *Uncle Tom’s Cabin*. The production is supported in part by the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County, the Maryland State Arts Council, and the Montgomery County Commission on Remembrance and Reconciliation.
