Introduction to Papermaking

Explore the fundamentals of handmade paper in this hands-on introductory workshop held at the Papermaking Studio. Led by classically-trained calligrapher and craftsman Josh Berer, the class covers the essential techniques of Western-style hand papermaking, from pulp preparation and sheet forming to couching, pressing, and drying. Participants will also be introduced to decorative methods such as pigments, inclusions, layering, and shaped deckles, as well as pulp additives like sizing, retention agents, and formation aid. The workshop is designed for beginners with no prior experience and serves as a refresher for those returning to papermaking. All necessary materials are included in the registration fee, and a small class size ensures personalized attention.

When: Sunday, July 26, 2026, from 10:30am to 4:30pm.

Showtimes: Single session, 10:30am–4:30pm.

Tickets: $195.00 per person. As of the published date, the class is at capacity; a waitlist is available by emailing the studio. Registration closes July 19, 2026.

Instructor: Josh Berer – a Washington, DC-based calligrapher and craftsman with an ijazah in Thuluth and Naskh scripts, currently studying Talik script. He also practices papermaking, marbling, illumination, bookbinding, and woodworking.

Run time: 6 hours (including break).

Ages: Not specified; open to beginners with no experience necessary.

Materials: A $30 materials fee is included in registration, covering all supplies. Optional items to bring: personal waterproof apron, rubber boots or comfortable shoes with good tread, notepaper and pen, and gloves for those with water sensitivity.
