L.A. Young & Soul Society - The Phyllis Hyman Songbook
L.A. Young & Soul Society present The Phyllis Hyman Songbook, a live tribute to the late soul, R&B, jazz, blues, and funk singer. L.A. Young is a DMV-based contralto whose naturally low, dark-toned voice closely matches Hyman’s range, allowing the songs to be performed without transposition or imitation. The performance is especially fitting at Blues Alley, where Phyllis Hyman herself once appeared.
Young’s show previously performed as *The Phyllis Hyman Experience*, including a sold-out three-night engagement at Anacostia Playhouse in 2019 and a presentation at City Winery D.C. The current version features her band, Soul Society, a group of seasoned players who shape each set to the room and perform entirely live. Young has fronted bands for more than two decades, recorded with members of Pieces of a Dream, and received three Maryland Music Awards nominations in 2018.
