Blues Alley Youth Orchestra
The Blues Alley Youth Orchestra presents a big-band jazz performance by accomplished student musicians ages 13 to 18. The ensemble performs under the musical direction of renowned bassist Michael Bowie and is dedicated to preserving and advancing the big-band jazz tradition.
Founded in 1985 alongside the Blues Alley Jazz Society, the orchestra is now in its fourth decade. Its repertoire includes music by Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Chick Corea, and Herbie Hancock. The group typically features a full complement of brass, reeds, and rhythm players, drawing young musicians from communities between Frederick and Fredericksburg. In addition to concert performances, orchestra members participate in civic and educational programs at senior centers, community events, and houses of worship. The ensemble has also performed at venues including the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian Institution, Voice of America, Carter Barron Amphitheater, Wolf Trap Farm Park, and Blues Alley.
