Bodyworks: The Jewelry of Art Smith Book Reading + Conversation + Signing

This Brooklyn event celebrates *Bodyworks: The Jewelry of Art Smith*, a book examining the life, work, and lasting influence of pioneering Black jewelry designer Art Smith (1917–1982). Authors Joanne Hyppolite and jewelry historian Toni Greenbaum will discuss Smith’s career and share stories and research about his artistic vision. The conversation will be moderated by Sebastian Grant and followed by a book signing.

Smith grew up in Brooklyn and later established a renowned jewelry studio in Greenwich Village. His bold, modernist designs were created in close relationship with the body, drawing connections among visual art, music, dance, and mid-century New York’s cultural life. The program marks the return of Smith’s story to Brooklyn and the publication of this Smithsonian Books title.
