72 Hour Composition Challenge

Fri, Sep 11, 2026at 6:30 PM
Alumni Drive, College Park, MD
Free

The 72 Hour Composition Challenge presents newly created works by students in the University of Maryland School of Music. Participating composers have 36 hours to write a piece, followed by 36 hours for performers to rehearse it before its concert premiere during NextNOW Fest. Each composer must already have a performer or ensemble committed to preparing and performing the work within that limited timeframe.

For the 2026 project, composers will draw inspiration from an artwork in the UMD Art Gallery’s permanent collection. One composition will also be selected for performance at the gallery’s Exhibition Preview and Reception. The event is presented in partnership with the UMD School of Music and is part of NextNOW Fest, The Clarice’s multi-day festival of performances and other arts experiences featuring University of Maryland and visiting artists.
