Spirit Electricity w/ Coptic Times, Soul Craft, Jenny Hates Techno, Thaylobleau, & more
Spirit Electricity headlines an all-ages, genre-crossing bill at Pie Shop with Coptic Times, Soul Craft, Jenny Hates Techno, Thaylobleau, and additional performers. The lineup spans reggae, hardcore, metal, punk, funk rock, indie rock, and other hybrid styles rooted in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia music scenes.
Coptic Times is a reggae tribute project featuring the rhythm section of Swamp Guinee, associated with the Legendary Wailers featuring Junior Marvin, The Archives, and Crank LuKongo, alongside Kenyatta Itola of Midnite/Akae Beka and I-Grade Records. Vocal duties include Rootsy Nassir of Zedicus, with additional musicians involved.
Soul Craft comes from the Washington, D.C./Northern Virginia area and draws on the region’s hardcore tradition, including the influence of Bad Brains. Its sound combines hardcore, metal, reggae, rock, and punk, emphasizing grooves, off-beat rhythms, bounce, and forceful breakdowns.
Jenny Hates Techno is a D.C. and Maryland indie rock band whose “soul-punk” or “post-punk funk” approach combines soulful singing, punk guitar, distorted bass, and heavy, funky drums. The group features Danielle Williams on vocals, John M. Ellison IV on guitar, Boo Dixon on bass, and Bala on drums. The band has performed at events and venues including Adams Morgan Day and Pie Shop.
Thaylobleau is a D.C. rock band formed around 2010 by veteran local musicians, including vocalist Terence Nicholson and guitarist Darrell Perry. The group combines driving rock and roll with D.C. hardcore punk and incorporates influences from 1970s metal, jazz, Bad Brains, and Black Flag. Its self-described “Funk Rock” sound also reflects the members’ backgrounds in the city’s hip-hop scene. The band’s 2016 debut album, *Oscars & Jellyfish*, features socially conscious writing addressing subjects such as gentrification and police harassment.
