The Walsh-García Collection Exhibit

The Walsh-García Collection Exhibit presents more than 450 books and other materials documenting one family’s enduring connection to Mexico. The collection explores Mexican history, art, cultural heritage, popular traditions, and everyday life, offering visitors a glimpse into the richness and complexity of the country’s cultural traditions.

The library was donated to the Mexican Cultural Institute by Eugene Walsh García on June 18, 2026. Its origins trace back to Eugene’s maternal grandfather, who came from Campeche and began assembling titles including Diego Rivera’s *My Art, My Life*, Alfonso Caso’s *The Aztecs, People of the Sun*, and an 1898 first edition of *Coordinación Alfabética de las Voces del Idioma Maya*, a colonial-era compilation of Maya-language terms. The collection later grew through the interest of Thomas F. Walsh, a Georgetown University professor and dedicated admirer of Mexico, whose relationship with María de los Ángeles García Campos continued the family’s connection to the country.

Now housed at the Mexican Cultural Institute, the former family library is available as a resource for scholars, researchers, students, and the general public. The exhibit reflects how cultural appreciation can be preserved and passed between generations.
