Rare Essence, known as “The Wickedest Band Alive,” is Washington, DC’s premier go-go band, celebrating 50 years of the genre they helped define. Mentored as teenagers by the Godfather of Go-Go, Chuck Brown, they became his most enduring musical descendants, delivering a consistently explosive live show that has built a devoted, multi-generational fan base. Go-go, originated by Brown in the mid‑1970s, links songs together over percussion breakdowns—a raw, non-stop party groove fueled by congas, cowbells, and timbales, with call‑and‑response that blurs the line between band and audience. Rare Essence’s influence extends beyond go-go; rap pioneer Doug E. Fresh dubbed them “The Wickedest Band Alive,” and numerous artists have borrowed their percolating percussion and key players for their own recordings. For this special 50th anniversary show, they are joined by special guests EU featuring Sugar Bear, adding another legendary go-go act to the lineup.
