Slow Pulp

Slow Pulp, the Wisconsin-bred and Chicago-based four-piece, brings its emotionally detailed indie-rock to 9:30 Club in support of *Yard*, its second full-length album and first release for ANTI-. The record explores isolation, self-acceptance, insecurity, trust, and learning to rely on others, moving between fuzzy guitar pop, pop-punk energy, Americana, and stark piano ballads.

The band’s close-knit history informs its sound. Guitarist Henry Stoehr and drummer Teddy Mathews knew each other from elementary school in Madison, while bassist Alex Leeds met them through the Good’nLoud Music program. Singer and guitarist Emily Massey later joined them at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Slow Pulp released the lo-fi *EP2* in 2017, relocated to Chicago the following year, recorded the *Big Day* EP at a Michigan cabin, toured with Alex G, and released its debut full-length, *Moveys*. The group’s work on *Yard* was shaped by intentional periods of solitude and collaboration, as well as Massey’s experiences with Lyme disease, chronic mono, and caring for her parents after a serious accident.

Songs highlighted in the event’s description include “Gone 2,” “Doubt,” “Slugs,” “Broadview,” “MUD,” the title track, and “Fishes.” “Broadview” features pedal steel from Peter Briggs and harmonica and banjo from Willie Christianson. Massey’s father, Michael, again helped record her vocals, contributing musical guidance and a personal understanding of the songs.
