Remix: The Collection
Remix: The Collection is a long-term exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts featuring a lively, challenging selection of works by women artists from around the world. Spanning six continents and six centuries, the presentation moves away from chronological displays that traditionally privilege white European and American artists and from hierarchies based on medium or gender.
Works are arranged in themed collection galleries throughout the museum, emphasizing the broad range of women’s artistic perspectives. Themes consider photography, color, domestic life, textiles, the natural elements, landscape, still life, and the scale and physical presence of sculpture and other works.

Themes: Photo Credit traces the work of photographic pioneers and artists who continue to expand the medium. Seeing Red examines the formal, realistic, and symbolic meanings of the color red. Objectified brings together historical and contemporary still lifes and related objects. Home, Maker explores women’s changing roles in domestic life and their agency as creators. No Shrinking Violet focuses on purple as a vehicle for fashion, creativity, innovation, and individual expression. Fiber Optics considers the history of textile practices associated largely with women and the ways contemporary artists adapt those techniques. Elemental looks at earth, water, fire, and air as artistic materials and as forces associated with life, purification, and renewal. Land Marks explores landscapes as expressions of cultural beliefs, memories, emotions, and ideology. Heavyweight challenges the assumption that women make art on a smaller or more delicate scale than men.
