Remix: The Collection

Remix: The Collection is a long-term reinstallation of the National Museum of Women in the Arts’ permanent collection that abandons traditional chronological and medium-based hierarchies in favor of thematic groupings. The exhibition rejects outmoded, gender-based art hierarchies by juxtaposing works across six centuries and six continents, emphasizing the limitless vision of women artists worldwide. Organized around nine themes—Photo Credit, Seeing Red, Objectified, Home Maker, No Shrinking Violet, Fiber Optics, Elemental, Land Marks, and Heavyweight—the display interweaves beloved favorites with recent acquisitions never before shown, revealing unexpected connections across time, culture, and material.

When: October 21, 2023 through October 25, 2026. Hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm; hours are subject to change, so check the museum’s Plan Your Visit page for updates.

Location: National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C. The exhibition occupies the Great Hall, Mezzanine, and 3rd floor galleries.

Themes: The installation is organized into nine thematic sections. Photo Credit showcases pioneers and innovators of photography. Seeing Red explores the formal, realistic, and symbolic uses of the color red. Objectified presents historical and contemporary still lifes and related objects. Home Maker spotlights women’s shifting roles in domestic life and their growing agency as makers. No Shrinking Violet demonstrates bold, personal expressions of fashion, creativity, and individualism using purple. Fiber Optics highlights the history of textile work by women and how contemporary artists employ these techniques. Elemental features artists using earth, water, fire, and air as creative tools. Land Marks examines how landscapes reflect cultural beliefs, memories, and ideologies. Heavyweight confounds expectations that women work on a smaller, more delicate scale.

Artists on View: The exhibition includes works by such artists as Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Alison Saar, Niki de Saint Phalle, Lavinia Fontana, and Loïs Mailou Jones, among many others spanning six centuries and six continents.

Audio Guide: A Remix Mix Tape audio guide is available, offering commentary on collection highlights throughout the museum.

Label Access: Exhibition label text for the third floor and for the Rotunda, Great Hall, Mezzanine, and stairwell galleries is available in a scalable, easy-to-read format for use during a visit or afterwards.
