6950 Maple Street Northwest, Washington, DC
$15-25
Featuring: Maria Grand, Shakoor Hakeem, Bashi Rose

Maria Grand & Shakoor Hakeem team up for an evening of virtuosic, conceptually driven improvisation at Rhizome DC, with Bashi Rose opening the night on drums. Grand, a saxophonist, composer, and vocalist praised for her lush tone and daring vision, will perform alongside percussionist Shakoor Hakeem, whose rhythmic approach prioritizes texture, space, and ritual. Rose, a theater artist and musician, bridges the spiritual and physical through drum-based explorations, setting a meditative yet powerful tone for the main set.

When: Friday, August 14, 2026. Doors open at 7:30 PM, music begins at 8:00 PM, and the event concludes around 10:00 PM.

Showtimes: The opening set by Bashi Rose starts at 8:00 PM, followed by the main performance from Maria Grand and Shakoor Hakeem.

Tickets: $15–25, available online via the TICKETS link on the event page.

Lineup: María Grand (saxophone, composition, voice) — a rising tenor saxophonist nominated for Best European Musician by the French Académie du Jazz in 2025 and voted a rising tenor star by Downbeat; she has performed with Joel Ross, Mary Halvorson, Nicole Mitchell, and others, and her albums have been praised by the New York Times, DownBeat, and JazzTimes. Shakoor Hakeem (percussion, improvisation) — rooted in Afro-diasporic traditions, he approaches percussion as a tool for texture and collective ritual, emerging from the Philadelphia creative music scene and collaborating with avant-garde jazz artists. Bashi Rose (drum set, theater) — co-founder of the Konjur Collective, uses drumming for spiritual healing and community engagement; his work has been featured at the High Zero Festival, Baltimore Rhythm Festival, Schomburg Center, and more.

Run time: The event runs approximately 2 hours, from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

Venue: Rhizome DC, 6950 Maple Street NW, Washington, DC 20012.

Note: Bashi Rose opens the evening with a solo drum set performance. The concert is presented as part of Rhizome DC's ongoing music series, and masks may be encouraged or required — check venue policy.
