Tricky

Tricky comes to Lincoln Theatre in support of *Different When It’s Silent*, his first album released under his own name in six years and his 15th studio album. The record marks a return to the directness and intensity of his earliest work while reflecting the grief, anger, isolation, and gradual renewal he experienced after the sudden death of his daughter in 2019.

The album grew from music Tricky was making between his home in France and a studio in Bristol. His manager, Alan McGee, encouraged him to release the material as a Tricky album rather than another side project. The result brings together stark electronic production, rock, blues, funk, melodic and melancholic passages, and contributions from a range of Bristol musicians.

Album: *Different When It’s Silent* is Tricky’s first album under his own name since 2019. It follows several projects released through his False Idols label, including work under the names Lonely Guest and Theis Thaws, as well as a collaboration with Marta.

Collaborators: Young Bristol singer-songwriter Mitch Sanders provides the album’s primarily male vocals and is featured prominently on songs including “I’m Yours,” “Because I Don’t Know,” and “Paris Maybe.” Other contributors include Bristol rapper Red Run Rambo, vocalist Marta, Christian Pattemore of Forgotton Pharaohs, an opera singer, a violinist, and a cellist.

Music: The album includes an interpretation of Dope Lemon’s “Marinade,” largely rewritten with new lyrics by Tricky, as well as the tracks “Still See Me There,” “Be Still in the Pain,” “So Cold,” “Frontier Town,” and “Out of Place.” The closing song features Marta and serves as a deeply personal tribute to Tricky’s daughter.

Background: Tricky describes the album as a turning point after a period in which grief left him emotionally and creatively withdrawn. Its songs address loss, pain, anger, and recovery, while also presenting a renewed desire to tour, record, and continue making music.
