Scientific America / Nectar Gnome / Nate Scheible & Layne Garrett
Scientific America, Nectar Gnome, and the duo of Nate Scheible and Layne Garrett share an experimental music bill focused on sustained sound, resonant instruments, free improvisation, and unconventional approaches to texture and repetition. The evening brings together acoustic drones, saxophone and string-based sound, percussive exploration, and abstract guitar-and-drums interplay.
Scientific America features Morgan Evans-Weiler and Flandrew Fleisenberg, who have pursued an ongoing study of acoustic phenomena since 2008. Their work uses violin and percussion activated through nontraditional physical techniques, emphasizing sustained frequencies and harmonic friction rather than conventional musical structures.
Nectar Gnome, comprising Jenny Moon Tucker and Meg Ragan, creates exploratory soundscapes with saxophone, strings, tones, and percussion drawn from an assortment of unusual objects. Based in Stevenson, Maryland, the duo is associated with Changing Ferns Farm, a space devoted to food, medicine, and healing. Tucker has longstanding connections to the DC and Baltimore experimental music communities and has performed at High Zero and DC’s Sound Scene.
Nate Scheible performs on drums and Layne Garrett on guitar. The Washington, DC-based musicians have worked together in projects including the art-rock band DRAWN and various ad hoc ensembles. Their duo performances center on free improvisation, with an emphasis on timbre, repetition, intuition, physicality, and abstraction. Scheible has released music through Outside Time and Warm Winters Ltd. and has been affiliated with Mock Identity, Scarcity of Tanks, and Self Destruct Button. Garrett also performs with Weed Tree and other projects.
