Les Misérables

Olney Theatre Center will stage Les Misérables for the first time in its history, running from October 30, 2026 through January 31, 2027 on the Roberts Mainstage. The production arrives as part of the 2026-27 season and marks the show’s 40th anniversary, celebrating a musical that became a Broadway phenomenon in the 1980s. Based on Victor Hugo’s sweeping novel, the story traces Jean Valjean’s transformation from prisoner 24601 into a fugitive living in hiding, then into Cosette’s protector, all while pursued by the implacable Inspector Javert. The action builds to the 1832 Paris uprising, where audiences witness the revolution at the barricade. With its mix of lyrical humor, demands for justice, and sacrifices made for love, the production is framed as a stirring holiday-season event.

The creative team is led by director Stephen Brackett (A.D. 16), with choreography by William Carlos Angulo and music direction by Christopher Youstra. The music is by Claude-Michel Schönberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer, original French text by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, and the adaptation was originally directed by Trevor Nunn and John Caird. The announced cast includes Kevin S. McAllister as Javert, Alex De Bard as Eponine, Tracy Lynn Olivera as Madame Thénardier, Jordan Friend as Thénardier, Stephanie Waters as Fantine, and Ben Clark as Marius, with additional casting to be announced.
