Gamelan and Koto Concert
The UMD Gamelan Saraswati Ensemble and UMD Japanese Koto Ensemble come together for a concert celebrating the musical traditions of Bali and Japan. The program pairs Balinese gamelan, known for its intricate interlocking rhythms and connection to the expressive movements of Balinese dance, with music for the koto, Japan’s traditional 13-string instrument, whose sound reflects the simplicity, tranquility and balance associated with Japanese nature.
The concert is directed by I Nyoman Suadin and Yuriko Gandolfo.
