Drunken Prayer
Drunken Prayer is a special Saturday matinee led by Morgan Geer, whose songwriting blends gospel-blues, country-blues, Americana, and devotional music with the atmosphere of both a biker bar and a swampy ashram. Geer performs with Matt Patton of Drive-By Truckers on bass and Claude Coleman Jr. of Ween on drums.
The performance draws on the band’s album *Thy Burdens*, recorded in North Mississippi with Patton and musicians connected to Appalachia and the Delta, including members of Wednesday, Band of Heathens, and Jimbo Mathis’ group. The record approaches “praise” music through a broad American roots tradition, combining spiritual themes with honky-tonk, country-blues, and gospel influences. Geer’s work also includes the song “Cordellia,” which was later covered by the New Orleans band Deslondes. The name Drunken Prayer reportedly came from a chance conversation between Geer and Tom Waits at a Bodega Coast fish market.
