Clifford Ross

Wed, Jan 21, 2026 – Sun, Oct 18, 2026
6th and Constitution Ave NW, Washington, DC
Free

Clifford Ross's *Digital Waves* transforms the National Gallery of Art's central Rotunda into a luminous seascape. A towering 23-foot-tall screen displays waves built from millions of glowing pixels—each one a tiny LED bulb—creating what the artist calls a “light storm.” Ross, who has spent decades photographing hurricane waves and generating computer-animated ocean videos, mimics the seemingly random shapes and movements of real surf. The installation invites visitors to stand beside the Rotunda’s cascading fountain and watch his imaginary sea roll by, offering a moment of wonder at the complexity and power of the ocean.

When: January 21 through October 18, 2026, during regular museum hours (10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.).

Location: West Building, Main Floor, Rotunda, National Gallery of Art, 6th and Constitution Ave NW, Washington, DC 20565.

Admission: Always free; no passes are required.

Note: Organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington. The work is a promised gift of an anonymous donor, © Clifford Ross.
