Teiku / Kutay Sezginel

A double bill at Rhizome DC presents Chicago pianist Josh Harlow and Detroit percussionist Jonathan Barahal's quartet Teiku alongside Baltimore-based multi-instrumentalist Kutay Sezginel. Teiku reimagines Passover melodies as vehicles for spontaneous composition, drawing from rare manuscripts, family recordings, and regional variations to transform liturgical texts into expansive, genre-fluid explorations. Kutay Sezginel bridges psychedelic rock and dark ambient with the microtonal melodies and odd rhythms of Anatolian folk music, using the neo-ethnic çağlama and electric cümbüş to revive old traditions in layered contemporary arrangements.
