Mary Chicken Soup And Rice leads an eclectic live music program at Rhizome DC, combining theatrical psychedelic rock and roll with punk, post-punk, goth, shoegaze, and space-rock influences. The lineup also features Frederick, Maryland’s Gaspers; Washington-area duo Youth In Government; and Baltimore punk act Tongue Scraper.

Mary Chicken Soup And Rice is the immersive rock-and-roll theater project of Los Angeles musician, playwright, and filmmaker Matthew Dunehoo. Performing as a trickster-like figure in smeared makeup and worn suits, Dunehoo combines electric guitar, dramatic vocals, prerecorded alien choirs, fake candles, and ritualistic imagery in a show that moves between psychedelic ceremony, manic theatricality, and communal performance. The music ranges from shimmering and ethereal passages to rough, heavy rhythms, drawing on artists and styles associated with Brian Eno, Siouxsie, David Bowie, Cocteau Twins, Love and Rockets, Carole King, and *Sesame Street*.

Dunehoo’s work also includes New York independent theater, filmmaking, the horror feature *WRETCH*, and the mental-health podcast *MINDBEND*. Following two hand injuries during the pandemic, Mary Chicken Soup And Rice developed into a one-person band. The project’s debut album, *Que Linda*, pays tribute to Dunehoo’s late mother, Linda, who painted its cover before her death from ovarian cancer in 2024.

Gaspers are a four-member band from Frederick, Maryland, formed in 2022. Their music brings together elements of punk, alternative, indie, post-punk, and goth. Youth In Government’s expansive space rock combines 1970s psychedelic textures with shoegaze atmosphere and post-rock intensity. The duo consists of Chris Mathews-Larsen on guitar and vocals and Trae Tomko on drums, vocals, and sampler; they performed and co-produced their debut album. Their influences include Radiohead, Slowdive, the Beatles, the Cure, and the 4AD catalog. Tongue Scraper contribute a punk set from Baltimore.
