Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Historic Synagogue

Dedicated on June 9, 1876, with President Ulysses S. Grant in attendance, the building represents a powerful moment of Jewish belonging in the American story. This special evening will commemorate the legacy of the original synagogue and mark the opening of a new permanent installation exploring 150 years of history and community. The milestone coincides with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, underscoring the founders’ affirmation of Jewish belonging and patriotism during the nation’s centennial. Today the restored synagogue stands at the heart of the museum.
