The Stern/Andrist Duo Plays Berg: UMD Wind Orchestra

Professor of Violin James Stern and pianist Audrey Andrist join the UMD Wind Orchestra for Alban Berg’s intimate Concerto for Violin, Piano and 13 Wind Instruments. The program also features the consortium premiere of Arturo Márquez’s *Sinfonía Nómada*, conducted by UMD Wind Orchestra music director Michael Votta, Jr.

Berg’s concerto was written as a belated 50th-birthday tribute to his mentor, Arnold Schoenberg. Its structure and musical ideas repeatedly draw on the number three, including a theme based on the names of Schoenberg, Anton Webern, and Berg. The work reflects the friendships and artistic life of 1920s Vienna, with personal and programmatic meaning woven throughout its three movements.
