Of Scissors and Screens: Experimenting with Collage and Serigraphy

Of Scissors and Screens: Experimenting with Collage and Serigraphy is a two-day intensive workshop that combines the analog practice of collage with the industrial process of screenprinting. Led by Maryland-based visual artist and screen printer Jeanette M. Bolden, the workshop guides participants from constructing paper collages to exposing and pulling consistent prints. Over the course of two days, attendees learn to layer compositions, experiment with color, and produce a small edition of prints while gaining a thorough understanding of studio workflow and screenprinting fundamentals. The workshop is designed for those at a beginner or intermediate level; prior experience with screenprinting is encouraged but not required. All materials are provided for use during the workshop, and a separate list of supplies for participants to bring ensures each person can personalize their exploration.

When: Saturday and Sunday, July 25–26, 2026, from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM each day.

Showtimes: Two full-day sessions, 10:30 AM – 4:30 PM.

Tickets: $357.00, which includes a $30 materials fee covering consumables such as inks, screens, transparencies, adhesives, and extra collage materials. Registration must be completed by July 23, 2026.

Instructor: Jeanette M. Bolden holds a B.A. in Studio Arts from the University of Maryland, College Park. Her artistic practice uses vivid color and semi-nonrepresentational forms to explore memory, nature, and the intersection of internal and external realities. She has exhibited at Gallery Y in Washington, D.C., served as lead instructor for the M-NCPPC Black History Month and Visual Arts Summer Internship program, and participated in Transformer Gallery’s Exercises for Emerging Artists program. Bolden received The Washington Print Club’s 2021 Young Printer Award and was featured in the fall 2021 issue of *On Paper: Journal of The Washington Print Club*.

Run time: 12 hours total (6 hours per day).

Level: Beginner/Intermediate. An introduction to screenprinting (approximately 6 hours) or equivalent experience is recommended but not required.

Ages: No specific age restriction given; the content and pace are appropriate for adults and motivated older teens.

Venue: Screenprinting Studio (exact street address not provided in the listing).

Materials: The included $30 fee supplies screenprinting inks, screens, transparencies, adhesives, and a variety of extra collage materials for use during class. Participants are asked to bring their own: one pad of 11”x14” printmaking or cotton rag paper (at least 15 sheets), at least one jar of screenprinting ink in a color of choice, a collection of paper scraps or magazines for collage, one black Sharpie, and black acrylic paint markers (at least one fine and one broad tip recommended). Optional items include a personal apron, a personal silkscreen (minimum 20”x24”, 200 mesh), and a notebook or sketchbook.
