Fruit Bats

Fruit Bats, led by Grammy-nominated songwriter Eric D. Johnson, presents music from *Baby Man*, an unusually intimate album made with producer Thom Monahan. Unlike the band’s earlier expansive recordings, the album centers primarily on Johnson’s guitar or piano, with only occasional synthesizer, creating a close, deeply personal encounter between performer and listener.

The performance reflects an important new chapter in Fruit Bats’ evolution, following Johnson’s work as a solo artist and with Bonny Light Horseman. *Baby Man* was written and recorded from scratch in collaboration with Monahan, with Johnson composing at an intense pace and exploring themes of love, loss, disappointment, rebirth, and the continuing search for meaning. Songs such as “Let You People Down,” “Stuck in My Head Again,” “Puddle Jumper,” “Baby Man,” and “Creature from the Wild” draw on that introspection, while Johnson’s prominent vocals give the material unusual emotional range and depth. The album’s restrained instrumentation is presented with a high-fidelity, expansive approach that Johnson describes as “minimalist-maximalism.”
