Indigo & Shibori 101 Workshop

Indigo & Shibori 101 is a hands-on natural-dyeing workshop led by Sophie Kanter. Participants will learn how to prepare and use an indigo vat, along with basic Japanese shibori techniques for tying and folding fabric into varied patterns. The class also covers caring for indigo-dyed items and offers an introduction to the history and creative possibilities of natural dyes.

Each participant receives a bandana to dye, and all other workshop materials are provided. Attendees may bring a few additional small- or medium-sized items made with at least 50% natural fibers. Wear clothing that can tolerate stains; an apron and rubber gloves are recommended if available.

Instructor: Sophie Kanter, a natural-dye artist whose practice focuses on local and seasonal dye plants, indigo, traditional crafts, and sustainable slow fashion. She began working with natural dyes in 2014 and has continued her textile education through the San Francisco Bay Area craft community and craft and folk schools around the country.

Workshop content: Making and dyeing with an indigo vat, introductory shibori tie-dye methods, creating patterned cloth, and caring for indigo-dyed items.

Materials: One bandana and all standard workshop materials are included. Participants may bring additional small- or medium-sized items containing 50% or more natural fiber.

What to wear: Clothing that may get stained. An apron and rubber gloves are optional but recommended.
