UMD Wind Orchestra Plays Hindemith

The UMD Wind Orchestra celebrates the centennial of Paul Hindemith’s first composition for wind band, *Konzertmusik für Blasorchester*. Led by music director Michael Votta, Jr., the program also features Hindemith’s *Kammermusik* No. 1 and Florent Schmitt’s *Dionysiaques*, a forceful work inspired by ancient Greek celebrations of wine and dance.

Hindemith, one of the most important German composers of his generation, premiered *Konzertmusik für Blasorchester* at the 1926 Donaueschingen Festival. Although written with amateur performers in mind, the work is notably complex, combining influences from German folk music and military marches with Hindemith’s distinctive melodies and rhythmic drive. The UMD Wind Orchestra is recognized as a leading collegiate ensemble for introducing new wind works and presenting major 20th- and 21st-century repertoire.
