LiteraryDJ: Remix the Page

LiteraryDJ: Remix the Page is an interactive creative research project presented by Andrew W. Smith, Visiting Assistant Research Professor of Digital Humanities & Digital Studies at MITH and AADHum. Inspired by remix culture and DJing, the project turns literary texts and archival materials into hands-on opportunities for experimentation and play.

Visitors can explore the writings of Frederick Douglass, Emily Dickinson, and other historical figures through natural language processing, data visualization, physical computing, augmented reality, and other emerging technologies. The experience includes turntables for synthesizing poetry with Markov chains, quantum-computing and word-cloud experiments, custom keyboards, and other experimental interfaces that recast literature through the familiar tools and language of music mixing.

Part of: NextNOW Fest 2026, The Clarice’s multi-day festival of innovative performances and arts experiences by artists from around the country and the University of Maryland campus. The festival is open to the general public.
