Follies, Stephen Sondheim’s sumptuous and sophisticated musical masterpiece, arrives at Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Harman Hall as part of an exciting co-production with Signature Theatre. Directed by Matthew Gardiner, this production reunites a chorus of former showgirls in 1971 who return to their theater for one last look at where it all began. Surrounded by the glamorous ghosts of their past selves, they reminisce and confront regrets as reality and memory blur in ways both dazzling and devastating. With an epic cast of 32 and a 14-piece orchestra, Sondheim’s incomparable score—including “Broadway Baby,” “I’m Still Here,” and “Losing My Mind”—shines in spectacular style.
