Out of Bounds
Out of Bounds is a group exhibition presented by Hamiltonian Artists and The Kreeger Museum. It brings together work by seven Hamiltonian Artists alumni across painting, photography, sculpture, video, and installation, examining how artists question, cross, and redraw established artistic and social boundaries.
The exhibition takes its title from the language of sport, referring to the space beyond the limits of play. Its works consider the rules and expectations that shape creative practice and society, as well as who has the authority to define and enforce those boundaries. The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the possibilities that emerge through disruption, experimentation, spontaneity, and risk.
The alumni artists’ work is shown alongside selected contemporary pieces from The Kreeger Museum’s permanent collection by Sam Gilliam, Frank Stella, Simmie Knox, and William Christenberry. The exhibition connects these artists through their challenges to conventional methods, rigid geometries, traditional approaches to painting, and established ideas of figuration and representation.
