NSO—Leonard Slatkin: Returning Love
Former National Symphony Orchestra Music Director Leonard Slatkin returns to conduct a program centered on memory, affection, and musical exchange. The concert pairs Slatkin’s *Schubertiade* with Joan Tower’s *Love Returns*, an NSO co-commission written for saxophonist Steven Banks, before concluding with Rachmaninoff’s expansive and emotionally turbulent Symphony No. 3.
The program moves from the intimate musical gatherings associated with Franz Schubert to a contemporary work inspired by that spirit of collaboration. Rachmaninoff’s symphony follows with its melancholic opening, richly Russian character, and anguished, frenetic finale, creating a conversation between earlier composers and newer musical voices.
