Introduction to Mokuhanga

Introduction to Mokuhanga is a two-day intensive workshop that immerses participants in the traditional Japanese art of water-based woodblock printmaking. Led by printmaker Carlos Doria, the course covers the entire process—from carving a design into Shina wood to hand-printing a multicolor image using water-based inks and Japanese paper. The workshop emphasizes hands-on learning: students will prepare a simple design, approximately 7 by 10 inches, and explore techniques such as gradients, color effects, textures, and layering. While all essential tools (baren, Japanese brushes, paper) are supplied, participants are encouraged to bring a sketch for their block, and optionally their own carving tools, watercolor paints, or an apron. Note that the focus is on technique rather than producing a finished edition. This is an intermediate-level class; at least six hours of prior carving experience (e.g., linoleum relief or woodcut) is required.

When: Saturday and Sunday, July 18–19, 2026, from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm each day.

Tickets: $422.00 per registration, which includes a $76 materials fee covering two Shina wood blocks, three sheets of washi printmaking paper, watercolors, and access to carving tools and brushes. Registration is extended through July 16, 2026. Ticket quantity is limited; after adding to cart, attendees can adjust quantities and edit attendee information.

Instructor: Carlos Doria is a printmaker and designer based in Washington, DC, working primarily in lithography and mokuhanga. He holds a BFA from Brooklyn College and an MFA in set and film design from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and has studied mokuhanga during residencies in Japan, as well as through workshops in the US and Europe.

Skill Level: Intermediate—previous experience with woodcut or linoleum carving (or at least six hours of carving) is required due to the extensive carving involved.

Materials Provided: The $76 materials fee covers two Shina wood blocks, three sheets of washi paper, watercolors, and shared access to carving tools and brushes.

Materials to Bring (optional or required): A simple sketch for the wood block (roughly 7×10 inches or smaller) is expected; personal apron or clothes that can get messy; optional personal wood carving tools if preferred over the class set; optional personal watercolor tube paints if a specific palette is desired; a notebook or sketchbook for ideas and notes.
