Catrina Crowns: A Day of the Dead Workshop

Catrina Crowns: A Day of the Dead Workshop is a hands-on creative session focused on the tradition and symbolism of Catrinas in Mexican culture and Día de Muertos celebrations. Participants will design and decorate their own personalized crowns, which can be worn at the Catrinas Parade DC and other Día de Muertos celebrations.

Led by Erika Romo and Josie Valdez, the workshop combines cultural learning with practical guidance on using flowers, colors, ornaments, ribbons, and other decorative elements. It is part of the preparation and advance programming for the Catrinas Parade DC, an annual celebration taking place in Washington, D.C. on October 31st.

Workshop: Participants will learn about Catrina traditions and symbolism, create and decorate a crown, and explore ways to personalize it with flowers, colors, ornaments, and other decorations.

Materials: Essential workshop materials are included. Participants may optionally bring their own flowers, ornaments, ribbons, decorations, or other materials to incorporate into their designs.

Parade connection: Finished crowns can be worn as part of the Catrinas Parade DC and other Día de Muertos celebrations.

Visiting hours: The Mexican Cultural Institute lists visiting hours as Monday–Friday, 10:00 AM–6:00 PM, and Saturday, 12:00 PM–4:00 PM.
